Hey all,
I was wondering what is out there that I could purchase that would increase the performance, but doesn't void any warantees. So far I have thought about, grounding cables, new exhaust, CAI, etc. I talked to the service manager at Team Nissan and he said to look it up on Nissan, but had no luck. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Things like CAI and exhuast usually don't void the warranty but if you take your car to the dealer with an engine problem with a CAI installed for example they'll most likely try to blame the problem on that which means they won't cover the cost of the repair. But there are a lot of mods out there that don't void the warranty.

Technically, NO mod itself will AUTOMATICALLY void the warranty. The dealer has the burden of proof on this. They must prove that your mod is responsible for the problem in order to deny warranty work. That being said, you will obviously have a harder time getting work done under warranty with say, a SC or a TT than if your car was stock.

Why do you say that? When I had my AEM CAI, it was awesome. It gave the car a nice mean growl over 4000 RPMs and at least felt like it had a bit more power.

Well, I have heard A LOT of stories of people who have had warranty troubles having installed the CAI. There has also been one person already in New Orleans who hydrolocked his engine because of CAI. For those who arent familiar with hydrolocking, he needed a new engine. And I could venture to say it isn't worth it. Your stock intake is basically ram air. And as far as I have seen on the dyno, CAI issues little to no gain. I am only offering my opinion, I think that CAI just isn't worth it. Too much at risk to little to gain. My $0.02

Hydrolock is an EXTREMELY rare thing to happen. As long as you don't drive your Z into a flooded street and essentially submerge the air filter under the water, it won't happen. Also, AEM has a bypass valve you can install to prevent this in the unlikely event you were to do this.

Well. I have CAI and I love it. And I have no regrets in getting it and installing it. I jump around to alot of boards and all I hear is dont get it. Well, dont knock it until you try it. My .02 cents.

I have a AEM CAI on my Celica and this version you can't put on the bypass valve. As long as your careful it's not a problem. For that matter you can hydrolock the engine even with a stock airbox on.
I will sa ythis though it does seem from the dynos and tests I've seen that the stock airbox isn't really wort hupgrading. Honestly probably the best performance increase you can do without voiding any warranties (well I've honestly never heard of a warranty being voided from it) is a exhaust upgrade. In fact the Z seems to take really well to a new exhaust and it's definitly more bang for your buck over the CAI. I personally love the Stillen because it tends to add more torque but if you want to stay cheaper go with a Borla.
Honestly though if your worried about warranties though I'd have to say modding your car perfomance wise isn't for you.

Not to be offensive, but where is all of this information coming from. I have seen many exhaust dynos and what you are saying sounds like a load of BS. Like I said, I don't mean to be disrespectful, just curious as to where you have heard this.

PLenty of exhaust dynos have shown the Stillen exhaut at about 11hp and 11lb of torque. I've not seen a dyno for another exhaust out there that high for torque.
Also your not to specific. Heard what?

Sport Z Magazine did a showdown for Exhausts and If I remember correctly the gains were all under 10hp? But I will admit they get bigger the more you mod the car.

Actually, I made an interesting observation the other day. We had some horrible rain here the other day, and I was out in the Z. After getting back in the garage, I toweled the car off lightly, popped the hood (just because I was bored), and pulled the air filter out. I was stunned to see that the lower third of the filter was moist with water, from whatever came in through the intake. Not sure what happens if you move the filter down into the nose of the car where it's wide open, but I can really see water just SOAKING that cone filter and eventually letting it pass through.
Then again, I have no 1st hand experience with wet weather and a CAI on a Z33, so this is just me speculating.

I believe his post says CAI are innefective, not exhaust. Ask Lemans350z, he got a whole whopping 1hp gain when he added his injen cai.

It requires a decent amount of water to hydrolock. More then you would think
As to the previous poster I was talking about the Stillen giving more Torque then any other exhaust not hp. The hp is about the same.
Whoops 2003z posted smae time as me. Um yah are you talking about my post on the Stillen being the best overall exhaust? Or are you talking about the CAI being ineffective? Because I never said exhausts were ineffective.

Living in Stevenson Ranch, CA has given my pop-charger a test over the past few days. I had to drive through a snow storm of ashes falling from the sky due to the fires that almost made it to our homes. So far so good, the car still seems to run fine, but needless to say, I will be cleaning and re-oiling the filter before taking the Z out again. As I was driving through the ashes, I was wishing I still had the stock air box.
On another note, they closed off the roads into Stevenson Ranch for a while on Tuesday. They wouldn't let those of us trying to get home to our families take our cars in. We had to park in the first available spaces we could find and walk into Stevenson Ranch. I had to leave the Z in a nearby mall lot. Later that night, after the roads were re-opened, I walked back up to the mall to get the Z while my wife continued to pack up personal belongings in our Sport-Trac in case we needed to evacuate. I found the Z covered in ashes and figured I would have to do a quick cleaning of the exterior when I got home.
I have 10 coats of Zaino on the Z at this time and to my surprise, as soon as I got up to 30mph..........the ashes totally slid off the car and blew away. That Zaino just wouldn't let anything grip to the surface..........I love Zaino!.
We had a few tense moments on Wednesday, but the fire fighters did a phenomanol job in battling back the blaze and today we feel confident that we have dodged the bullet.
The point is, if you are in an area that has periodic wild fires, your intake better be able to block out flying ash as well as water.
