Is it possible to drive a single turbo/twin turbo 350z/G35 for more then 2-3 hours. I heard rumors I am not sure if they are facts, but you can't drive a car that's turbo for more than a couple of hours before they overheat?...

Not true. But it is highly suggested to anyone that is installing a turbo (single or twin) upgrade the cooling i.e. radiator, thermastat for sure and an oil cooler plus vented hood would also be prudent modifications but not absolutely necessary for a car running lower boost levels. You could upgrade the cooling fans as well. From what I understand the ones that have trouble overheating are those who have sleeved motors or stroker motors but if all the approptiate cooling modifications are done then it should not be an issue thre either.

What do you consider to be a low boost? also does these kits that are out today come with anything to help keep the engine cool, besides the intercooler?
(Sorry if it's a noob question)

well are you going to be going full boost the whole time??
If you are cruising on the highway you are not in boost so basically like before it was boosted, I drove mine from South Florida to Atlanta all in one day and no issues.

The intercooler cools the compressed air generated by turbos. The higher the boost the more the air is compressed and thus the hotter the air becomes and that makes you more prone to detonation. Some people use intercooler sprayers to help get intake temps down or a meth/h2o injection system. Like I mentioned before good tuning and support mods in addition to routine mantainence is the best way to insure reliability.
Like Westpak said most of your normal daily driving will be done out of boost. High boost on a stock block motor is around 8-9psi and for bult motors it usually > 15psi (depending on the kit used).
Considering where you live I would go visit VTR or MRC, one of them might even be willing to take you around the block in one of their turbo'd cars.

Never had a problem w/my car overheating,it does get a little bit hotter under the hood than a N/A car,but never over heated.your always welcome to drive my car and like i said before you can always stop by vinny's shop and talk.

No issues with overheating here either, on either of my maps. I do have the Koyo radiator but that is my only cooling mod. I actually did this before the turbos since I needed to replace the radiator anyways and the aftermarket Koyo was cheaper than a stock replacement.

my car has never overheated. I have every cooling mod known to the Z community. Driven to austin a few times (3 hours) and dogged on it on the way up there. Boostin 13-15psi on the street. Built with sleeves too.
Take the time to think about your build, address the issues that might pop up beforehand and you'll be fine. turbos generate alot of heat, no doubt about that...you just have to manage it. Some kits (like turbonetics) tend to burn things under the hood because of the design (the turbo is up front next to all kinds of things). Some folks burn AC lines or wiring harnesses with that kit.
Only single turbo kit I would consider would be the Powerlab kit.
Otherwise, stick with Greddy twins....they have been proven over and over to make reliable power.

^would have recommended that kit, but internal wastegates are for butt sniffers. :)

The STS turbo system is a single turbo that is mounted where the rear exhaust should be. Its not the most popular system out there and some will say its not worth the money. I think its a pretty good system and have thought of going that direction myself. It keeps the temps alot cooler and their are guys that are running it now that don't have any supporting cooling mods and no toubles yet. Its because the turbo is not in the engine bay and it keeps cooler that ones that are. Heres the link

But again like everyone else said the tune is more important to your car than the da*n ignition key once you go FI

^lag tends to be a concern with most ppl when you go with a rear mounted turbo system. You gotta push alot of air to get it back to the engine compartment. Rode in a C6 TT that had the STS system...looks hawt...but the pipes that run through the body work are like a mile long. And you feel the lag even at 5psi. Not a bad system though.

i took a ride in a vette with the twin system and it didn't have any lag at all it seemed like. was it the single system you rode in? I am going to see a guy that has it on his G in charllotte soon and see how i like it. still looking for someone with a vortech. F/I to many choices it seems like
Opps just read the thread again. I am surprise to hear about lag from the TT setup, its one of the few things you find most people don't experience on this system they thought they would.

What ever kit you end up getting just make sure it is installed and tuned by someone who know what they are doing.

STS with mild boost should not have lag.... the problem comes when you plan to upgrade the turbo
westpak
12-30-2008, 07:33 PM
my understanding is that it does have lag specially on the first pull, because the aiir cools off too much before it gets to the turbo so it takes a couple of pulls to get the air hot all the way to the turbo

I had pics somewhere...
It lags...trust me. They even made the pipe diameter super small so it wouldn't lag as much (less volume). The lag is still there. The exhaust goes all the way to the back and spools the turbos....then the air coming back is router to the side, through the rear fender, over the wheel, back down the wheel, down the door and up the front fender. Alot of bends, alot of pipe. And just like westpak said, first pull is really noticable...Its got alot of volume to fill....its a good system, don't get me wrong...and is cool as **** to look at it....i dunno...maybe I'm spoiled by the no-lag TTZ. full boost at 2700rpms is alot quicker than most boosted cars. :shrugs:

That twin intake makes it kind of tricky for Forced induction, but there are 3 twin turbo kits on the market though.

The twin intake on the HR is great for turbos, not so great for superchargers...has anyone heard of SC for the HR? Not that we need it, just wondering...

Only on SC kit for the HR that I know of is Swiss made but I am not sure if it went into production. Here is a link: http://www.400zfrenzy.com/forum/showthread.php?p=64081

My Z has the JWT TT set-up. I have driven many long journeys and never had a problem. As has been said THE TUNE IS EVERYTHING!! A well tuned motor will not give a problem. Also to repeat; upgraded cooling systems can do nothing but help.
